Sustainable Practices

Paraiso del Mar's commitment to protecting the natural environment established the development as one of the most complex, comprehensive and cooperative environmental planning efforts ever undertaken in Mexico. Sustainable practices include management by a staff of 12 and having an environmental consulting firm on retainer, using electric boats and cars to cut carbon emissions, having all potable water desalinated onsite, employing reclaimed water for all onsite irrigation, using construction materials and methods that emphasize energy efficiency, and putting in place a rigorous program of preserving the natural plants and wildlife on El Mogote.

Paraiso del Mar's preparation for environmental sustainability began when owner and developer Luis Cano commissioned a report from the Mexican government's Center of Biological Research (CIB) to examine the plant and animal life on El Mogote peninsula. Forty researchers, many from La Paz universities, conducted a 10-month study that created a report that assisted Paraiso del Mar to embrace environmental and ecological sustainability within its design plans. The information compiled from the ecological study on El Mogote led Paraiso del Mar to seek a long-term sustainability plan. In 2004, developer Luis Cano founded the Foundation for Baja California Sur to oversee not only the preservation and maintenance of El Mogote peninsula but that of La Paz and Baja California Sur as well.

Half of the site will be partially or fully preserved dune, mangrove and plum thicket habitats. A nature corridor is preserved through the center of the property. An on-site agronomist oversees the rescued flora and fauna. A drought and sea-tolerant turf called "Salam" paspalum was selected for the golf course.
